My Pokémon GO...

The intro... 

Hello everyone - I have not published since last August as I have been very busy but today, I felt the need to write about this game and why it is simply good and fun. 

Firstly, what is Pokémon GO? The article attached directly from the GO website, can give you some insight as to what you can do on it, how the Pokédex works etc.. 

BUT! Moving on from that - let me first talk about my experiences with Pokémon GO. At first, it was a little sketchy, the servers were lagging quite bad and many of the functions that were available required me to log out and log back in multiple times (yawn!). However, after those issues went away, I could finally tackle gyms and conquer the world as a Pokémon master (ha). 


The first... 

My first Pokémon was Charmander, although I do slightly regret it due to the fact that there has not been a single one near me that I can catch but that would definitely not stop me from capturing Pokémon and filling up my Pokédex, which right now which actually consists many of the first generation Pokémon. My first wild capture was a Pidgey, typical, I know.


Capturing - the bane of my Pokémon life (flying types, nasty).

Capturing in this game is not the usual Pokémon-styled way of obtaining Pokémon. You have to aim your Pokeballs properly and the smaller the circle becomes, the better chance you have obtaining the Pokémon. You also obtain bonus experience points when you hit inside of the circle. It is fairly easy to tell if you will capture the Pokémon or not; the ball will do the standard flashing three times, after the third flash you will see stars around the Pokéball and this means you have successfully captured the Pokémon!

It is also important to note that the higher the Combat Points (CP) of a Pokémon, the harder it is to capture and will require you to use better Pokéballs.

Pokeballs...

Some information below about Pokéballs:

* You start with the standard Red & Silver Pokéballs and they can be refilled from a PokeStop (I will touch more on this later).
* At level 10, you unlock Great Balls, which improves the chances of obtaining high CP Pokémon by a small amount (I've only personally noticed a few shades difference in colour).
*Update* At level 20, you unlock Ultra Balls. This greatly improves the chance of capturing Pokémon, especially the ones with higher CP.

As you can see - it does become a little bit easier, found this guy sitting on top of my microphone whilst writing this.

The rewards of capturing a Pokémon are always the following:

What is experience and Stardust used for?
Stardust is obtained from capturing and opening Pokémon eggs. You can use Stardust to empower your Pokémon's CP which allows them to perform much better against other Pokémon.

Experience is used to level up your trainer level. Trainer level is needed to get better quality items; such as new Pokéballs and a higher Combat Point capacity.

** Training Pokémon! **

This is probably the most important part of this entire blog post - whilst I was playing, I felt a little underwhelmed about why my Pokémon were starting out so weak, even after evolution.  So I decided to do a little test.

The Pidgeot on the left is from a trainer who is lower level than I am and cannot push the Pokémon's CP higher than 650 whereas I can push it over 899 due to being a higher trainer level.
My original theory was that you needed to train your Pokémon before you decide to evolve them, but upon doing some testing myself, it seems your trainer level has a direct influence on how high you can push your Pokémon's CP.

I am currently at level 17 20 and I can push my Pokémon's CP to over 1,000 but not over 1,150 currently.

I would definitely recommend that you save up all your Stardust and use it on Pokémon that you really enjoy playing with; you only get 100 per capture after all!


What about progressing quickly with experience?

Firstly on this point, as you level you will obtain Lucky Eggs (these give you double experience), save these! If you are keen to play Pokémon and dedicate a lot of time into being good and the best, you need to capture a lot of Pokemon that can evolve with 12 candies. The reason for this is because they give the same amount of experience as a Pokemon that can evolve in 25 or 50 candies.

Pidgey & Weedle are great examples, simply for the reason they only need 12 candies to evolve. so technically for every 4 Pidgey you catch you can get 1,000 experience if you evolve with Lucky Egg. This is strictly for faster leveling. If you want to take a more casual approach to the game, just evolve and dump everything into 6 Pokémon, so you can contend with the gyms in your local area.

Gyms, why have them?

Gyms in this game are quite unique, I found out that you can set your own Pokémon to defend a gym. This also means that a Pokémon that is defending a gym cannot participate in other gym battles until it has been defeated.  I also firmly believe that you cannot change or shift out Pokémon from the gyms until they have been defeated, but I could be entirely wrong.

Gym Prestige:

If you are fighting the enemy faction, defeating their Pokémon will remove prestige from their faction and you can place one of your own Pokémon and every time someone from your own faction defeats your Pokémon the prestige goes up.

For example... if your faction is Mystic (Blue) and you defeat a red gym leader, you will destroy their prestige and you can place your own Pokémon there which takes it for your own faction. For very 2,000 prestige your faction earns, you can add an additional Pokémon, so far the highest I have seen it is 8,000, with 4 Pokémon. Additionally, attacking your own gyms will not kick the player off of your own faction's podium.

Pokédex - how it works

This does not really need that much explaining - it shows you two tabs, 1: Pokémon you've discovered (but have not captured) and 2: your captured Pokémon.

Issues... 

Some of the issues & problems that I ran into, like bugs!:

* Certain gyms' Pokémon near me would not faint when battling, causing the game to trigger the 'draw' mechanic due to the timer to run out. 
 * Upon logging in, sometimes PokéStops don't work at all, you can spin them indefinitely without any rewards. 
* If you open up the bag whist a Pokémon is about to run away, you get locked into the bag and cannot proceed to do anything.
* My area seems to have all the bad Pokémon (no Pichachu ~cries slowly~). I demand that this be changed immediately.


Improvements that can be made...

* Have a system that allows you to 'check box' Pokémon to transfer.
** Either that point or put the 'Transfer' list at the top next to evolve etc... The reason for this is because it sometimes take time for the map to load and it can cause the button to be shifted just before clicking it and you have to scroll again.

* Allow you to change which Pokémon you have at the gym.

* Add the type of Pokéball that the Pokémon was caught with.

* Allow people to communicate with people in their area, but don't reveal location due to safety and privacy.
* Allow Pokéballs to come with a variety of skins. I.e. Pokéball can come in yellow/red/blue for each team. Great ball can become dark/deep blue/red/yellow, it would allow you to see which team caught this Pokémon.

* Allow certain CP Pokémon to give extra candy when being captured / transferred - add some extra reward for being a little bit more difficult to catch.

* Give bonus experience and stardust for using only a single Pokéball to capture something.

* Give Pokéstops the chance to train Pokémon's CP, similar to the training centre in the other games - after a few hours it will give X amount of CP but cannot exceed the limitations on the trainer's current level.

* Quiet towns and countrysides definitely need to have some additional Pokémon spawns added to them; I have seen multiple posts of people that it is lacking quite a bit but this problem also extends to Pokéstops being quite rare.
